In balloon-borne measurements of tropospheric aerosol particles made in Beijing, China (40°N, 116°E) in summer of 1994, as a Japan- China cooperative research on aerosol particles in the Asian continental atmosphere, irregular shape particles, possibly soil particles, were frequently identified in the free troposphere, and concentration of super - micron particles in the free troposphere was higher, in comparison with the values obtained in Japan, suggesting larger size particles frequently diffused into the boundary layer atmosphere and the free troposphere. Soil particles having solution on their surface were found in the free troposphere, which suggested the possible heterogeneous reaction on particle surface and/or coagulation of soil particles and sulfuric acid droplets in the free atmosphere.
