DEVELOPING AN INTERNATIONAL SPECIFICATION TO COMBAT AAR PROPOSALS OF RILEM TC 191-ARP

In response to a request by the international organising committee for the AAR conferences, RILEM TC 191-ARP has developed a draft international specification to minimise the risk of damaging AAR in concrete. To achieve this the main existing specifications have been reviewed and the most advanced concepts adopted. Part 1 of this specification, dealing with alkali-silica reaction, is presented in this paper. It is suggested by RILEM TC191-ARP that this proposal represents an effective foundation for harmonised and compatible specifications worldwide. Part 2, dealing with reactions involving carbonate aggregates, is still being developed.
