The escalating threat of disasters from typhoon winds raises questions concerning the approaches we take in estimating and designing of tall buildings for safety in those storms. This paper presents methods to estimate the effects of ductility on structural safety of tall buildings in typhoon wind environment. Monte Carlo simulation method was used to generate typhoon storms and results from force balance test were used to obtain structural responses. Inelastic damage accumulations have been derived based on assumptions of narrow-band random process of a single-degree-of-freedom system. Results of inelastic damage accumulation in storms were translated into a yield reduction factor due to the beneficial ductility effects. It was demonstrated that a ductile structure does have a significant reserve of safety against collapse due to wind action than a brittle structure of the same static strength.
