Long-Term Potential of MEMS

MEMS technology represents a major technological advance with enormous potential, and the market is gathering momentum. This paper takes the premise that in the long term, MEMS will become as pervasive as the semiconductor, and as important to the economy. To estimate the long-term potential of the MEMS industry, we use the historical growth of the semiconductor market as a guide to produce a regression equation to forecast MEMS shipments in the United States. Then, to extrapolate from U.S. shipments to worldwide shipments, we use statistics on the growth of semiconductor shipments by geographic region as a guide. The potential is spectacular. By 2025 we expect worldwide MEMS shipments to reach almost $2 trillion.
