EMERGING APPLICATIONS FOR INERTIAL MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS

Imego and others have recently successfully squeezed out "tactical grade navigation performance" out of low cost automotive gyro dies, sufficient performance to measure the earth rate. These achievements suddenly makes many new applications reachable, technical and economical, for example we have built a "GPS Shadow Explorer" for geodetic applications, integrated Inertial Measurement Unit's (IMU's) in crash dummies, etc. In this paper a brief background to the technical breakthrough is presented and some examples on emerging INS applications are given.
