Establishment of 1,000 t/h Coal Preparation Plant at Liddell Mine

The Liddell Coal Mine is operated by Xstrata Coal NSW. It is located in the Hunter Valley and coal has been mined and processed on this site for almost 40 years. The coal is mined from the Singleton measures, and is processed to produce a semi-soft coking coal and export thermal products. rnWith operations expanding, a number of options were considered to upgrade the plant to expand capacity and improve the effectiveness of washing. These ranged from a significant refurbishment of the plant to the establishment of a completely new facility some distance from the current site. The selected option was to build a new 1000 t/h module at the existing site. rnThis plant was commissioned in August 2008 and was constructed under an Alliance Agreement between Xstrata Coal and Downer EDi Engineering. rnThe plant includes a raw coal screening step to remove trash from old underground first workings followed by desliming screens cutting at around 1.4 mm ww. The coarse coal is separated by dense medium cyclones, while spirals are used to upgrade fines that are deslimed at 0.09 mm. rnThe paper will describe the issues that were peculiar to this site and needed to be incorporated into the design, details of the plant design, and the outcomes of the plant construction and commissioning activities.
