Large diameter dense medium cyclones have become a popular option for the treatment of coal coarser than 1 mm which represents as much as 85% of the plant feed. Due to the wide particle size distributions along with the high mass flow rates, one or two double-deck screens are commonly used for achieving a 1 mm separation on the feed material and for the drain-and-rinse application of both the clean coal and refuse streams. As a result, achieving an accurate assessment of process efficiency becomes difficult to achieve due to the number of process streams generated from each deck. This publication will detail an efficiency study that was conducted on a large diameter dense medium cyclone that overcame many of the obstacles through the design and installation of sample cutters that combined the material from the overflow of the upper and lower screen decks. Process efficiency data is presented as a function of particle size at three medium-to-coal ratios.
