Synthesis and Combustion Study of Metallic Salts of Trinitrophloroglucinol

Mono-, di- and tri-substituted salts of trinitrophloroglucinol (TNPG) with alkaline and alkali-earth metals (Li, Na, K, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) as well as Zn, Cd, Pb, Mn, and Ag have been synthesized and analyzed by the methods of potentiometric titration and with IR spectroscopy. Ignition temperatures and burning rate vs. pressure dependences of the salts have been determined. By their combustion behavior, all the salts can be divided into two groups. The first group comprises salts, which show fast burning rates. Silver and lead salts of TNPG showed the highest burning rate among others. Salts of the second group have lower burning rates and are usually incapable of burning at atmospheric pressure. Considering high burning rates and the absence of heavy metals in the molecule, alkaline metal salts can be recommended for further investigations as components of ecologically clean initiating compositions.
