A Two-Man Arctic Ocean Expedition: Implications for Planetary Surface Exploration and Post-Mission Family Re-Integration

A two man Arctic ocean expedition was studied as an analog for identifying personality, interpersonal and work performance issues that might occur during planetary surface exploration. Possible changes in interactions with spouse upon return were also assessed. Evaluations were conducted at intervals extending from pre-expedition to a four month post-expedition follow-up. The findings indicated that the abrupt termination of the expedition due to weather conditions resulted in significant tension between the decision-making leader and his high achievement oriented, less experienced teammate, resulting in a lack of communication between the two while waiting to be rescued. During the expedition, the wives provided social support to each other, but at times experienced the social support and concern of their community as stressful. Each couple reported a change in their overall relationship with their spouse following the expedition; some changes were in a positive, others in a negative direction. Debriefing interviews indicated a growing autonomy and distancing by the wives in relation to their husbands. The implications for crew selection for planetary surface expeditions, decision authority structure, and anticipation of the kinds of family problems encountered upon return to Earth are examined.
