The flow in natural compound channels is analysed within the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations (NSWE) framework. In particular lateral mixing is analyzed in relation with the characteristics of large-scale eddies with vertical axis (macrovortices hereinafter) which are generated at the boundary between the main channel and the flood plains.
