Seismic Reponses of Metropolitan Bridges and Flyovers - A Comparative Study and the Need for A Renewed Strategy

In this paper the author has tried to emphasize the need of looking into the seismic aspects of the metropolitan bridges and flyovers as they are of paramount importance to the traffic needs, human lives and national economy. The factors such as, restriction of land and space, high volume of traffic, less time for construction, minimum disturbance to public, aesthetics etc. have to be kept in mind at the time of planning the structure. The designers are required to use their prudence to cut a balance keeping in view the seismic needs of the structure. The author discusses some of the case studies of the past earthquakes and identifies the parameters which are to be given due consideration and brings out the technological advancements.
