The bridging of the Danish straits, including the construction of the 18 km Storebaslt Link (1998) and the 16 km Oresund Link (2000), represents a major societal investment in road and rail infrastructure. The paper reviews the measures taken and innovations adopted to ensure a 100 year design lifetime. In addition, the management approach is described, the differences between the Storebaelt Link and the Oresund Link being highlighted. An important message is that monitoring and maintenance issues should be addressed as early as in the contract documents, and that principles of contracting and construction management are just as important to the durability of the structure as are material specifications and inspection plans.
