Automation of Formally Decommissioned Coal Preparation Facility

GCI (Systems Integration Company) was invited to participate in the rebirth of the New SaintrnNick, decommissioned coal preparation facility owned by Reading Anthracite. Discussionrnfocuses on the collaborated effort to provide a cost effective control solution and the challengesrnassociated with providing a simplified operation.rnAlthough no prior hands on experience with coal preparation, Reading provided ample processrnflow and P&ID diagrams. With a strong background in process control and material handlingrnsystems, GCI introduced Reading to ISA S88.1i terminology, modeled the entire operation, andrndeveloped a detailed set of functional and design descriptions. Together with invaluablernassistance from the electrical contractor we were able to resurrect the facility to efficientrnoperating capacity. Today, the fine coal plant processes 200 tph (150 tph of run of minernanthracite and 50 tph of reclaimed silt from a local impoundment area). The product is cleanedrnto metallurgical coal specifications.
