Development of a Harmonized Approach to Qualification of Electrical Equipment for Nuclear Power Plants Around the World

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the development of a harmonized approach to equipment qualification between the two main qualification standards organizations in nuclear; the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In accordance with the IEC-IEEE joint development agreement (AC/22/2008), both IEC Subcommittee 45 A (SC45A) and IEEE Nuclear Power Engineering Committee (NPEC) have agreed that IEC 60780,1 'Nuclear power plants - Electrical equipment of the safety system - Qualification,' and IEEE 323,' 'Standard for Qualifying Class IE Equipment for Nuclear Power Generating Stations,' the standards on qualification for the respective organizations, constitute suitable candidates for development of a joint international standard.
