The Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory (MIBL) as part of the University of Michigan, Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS) department, is setup to offer single, dual and triple ion irradiation capabilities to scientists interested in studying ion beam interactions with materials. The laboratory operates as a user facility that provides a large variety of experimental conditions not available elsewhere in a single laboratory. These conditions include, but are not limited to, light and heavy ion irradiations with energies from 1 MeV to over 10 MeV, ion implantation from 20 keV to 400 keV, sample temperature control from liquid nitrogen (LN) to over 1100 ℃ and a variety of beam modes such as focused, defocused and raster-scanned. There is ongoing work to expand these capabilities to provide in-situ observation of irradiated materials with a TEM (currently being installed). The new TEM will be connected in the first stage to one of the accelerators and an ion source providing the capability to conduct in-situ dual ion irradiations at high temperature. An overview of these capabilities is provided, as well as a few users and projects statistics.
