Experimental Study of Particle Deposition in an Air-Conditioning Cart and the Environmental Control System of a Commercial MD-82 Airplane

The serious air pollution and low on-time performance of commercial flights in China could result in more particles being deposited in ground air-conditioning carts (GAC) and environmental control systems (ECS). The particle deposited in the GAC and ECS could cause performance issue of the GAC and airplane. In addition, particles penetrated to the air cabin could cause advert health impact on the passengers and crew. This investigation measured the PM2.5 particle concentrations and the number of particles with different size at the inlet and outlet of the GAC and the ECS inan MD-82 commercial airplane under air quality index (AQI).The results showed that the PM2.5 mass concentration deposition in the GAC and the ECS was 40-50%, while most of the deposition was in the ECS. For particles with a diameter of 5 μm or larger, the deposition was more than 90%. For small size of particles with a diameter 0.5 μm or less, the deposition was minimal.
