We investigated the occurrence of ubiquitous environmental contaminants [i.e., 17 toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p- dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs), 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)] in waste paper and lumber generated from industrial complexes and origin source of these contaminants. The total concentrations of 17 PCDDs/Fs, 12 DL-PCBs and 16 PAHs in wastes ranged from 0.144 to 176.8 pg/g-dry (0.000 - 2.642 pg WHO-TEQ/g-dry), 28.23 to 4097 pg/g-dry (0.001 - 3.205 pg WHO-TEQ/g-dry) and 0.819 to 52.18 ng/g-dry, respectively. Generally, the concentration of these contaminants in waste paper was higher than those in waste lumber. The OCDD was dominant in waste paper and lumber, which seemed to be related with the bleaching process of paper industry or PCP treated wood. The distribution patterns of DL-PCBs in wastes were similar with those of commercial PCB products, indicating the effect of commercial PCBs products on ubiquitous environment. The specific ratios of several PAH compounds in waste paper were shown that these were related with pyrogenic sources.
