DIVALENT MICROSPHERE VACCINES ARE PROTECTIVE AGAINST TETANUS AND DIPHTHERIA

As a first endeavour to develop a single-injection multivalent vaccine, we have investigated the immu-nogenicity and efficacy of divalent microsphere (MS) vaccines against tetanus and diphtheria. Guinea pigs were immunised with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids (DT and TT) contained separately in PLGA- or PLA-type MS. All formulations tested were strongly immu-nogenic, and the combination of antigens did not cause consequential immunological interactions between anti-tetanus and anti-diphtheria responses. Finally, these divalent vaccines produced protective immunity against both experimental tetanus and diphtheria in titers comparable or higher than a licensed divalent vaccine.
