Fibre-Channel and Gigabit Ethernet standardization opened the first significant VCSEL commercial market, and accelerated development. Standards have shaped VCSEL technological developments ever since, with diminishing government R&D funding, e.g. to today's 4-level 50 Gigabit/sec devices and 4-wavelength WDM.
