As data demand rises endlessly in the world, continuing exponential growth of data generation, transfer, collection, analysis, and storage is driving and shaping optical communication networks in different ways. The two most notable advances have been wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and coherent communications, which again continue to evolve and are being combined to create even more advanced networks such as super-channel and flex-grid architectures. Semiconductor diode lasers, as light sources of these systems, must meet an ever more demanding and diverse set of technical specifications. For example, some of the new transmission schemes also require that the wavelength channels are mutually coherent, or locked together in phase.
