Outreach surgery in margin to the 57th West African college of surgeon congress: An example of essential, safe and life-saving surgery to promote for remote areas

Most of the population lives in rural areas in Burkina Faso. This study reports an experience of a surgical outreach in the North Region of the country. Patients who underwent a surgery during surgical outreach in the North of Burkina over a week were enrolled prospectively. Results: 24 anaesthetist (6 doctors, 18 nurses), and 23 surgeons (7 from Europe and USA) participated. A total of 225 patients were screened whose 100 had a preanesthetic evaluation. Finally, 125 patients were operated. A rapid pre anaesthetic evaluation was done the day of surgery. The mean age of patients was 53.9 ± 19.8 years. Five cases were aged less to 14 years, 45 were elderly (aged over 65 years) and 75 adult's cases (15 to 64 years). The sex ratio was 1.1. Housewife was most frequent. Majority (56.8%) of patients lives out of the city of Ouahigouya and were ASA 1 (58.4%). Cataract was found in 52% and local anaesthesia (54.4%) was the most used. Surgery was hospiday (64.8%) and morbidity was met in 7.2% Outreach surgery ended with a lucky child of 2 years with acute respiratory distress after swallowing a coin which has been extracted. In conclusion this was a safe, life-saving and free outreach surgery, an example to promote in rural areas.
