AN EVALUATION OF THE WATER SENSITIVITY OF ACID RAIN ON MODIFIED ASPHALT CONCRETE IN TAIWAN

Stripping is defined as the breaking of the adhesive bond between an aggregatesurface and asphalt cement in an asphalt concrete. Lime is added as an anti-strippingagent and filler in asphalt concrete, to reduce the phenomenon of stripping. There aremany things that affect stripping such as the electrical charge of a surface (Zeta Potential),the particle charge, the pH value, the silica content of an aggregate, acid rain, intensity ofthe rain, type of asphalt cement, voids in the specimen, characteristics of the filler and itscompact capability during construction. In this study, we found that the best proportionsfor an asphalt concrete were 1% lime (by weight of the mixture), 3% mineral filler and5.5% asphalt content. This mixture was found to be the most efficiency in theimprovement of the stripping resistance of asphalt mixtures. The use of lime in asphaltcement can reduce temperature susceptibility and penetration, increasing the viscosity andsoftening point of the asphalt materials, which will improve the pavement resistance torutting, shoving, bleeding, cracking and aging phenomenon .The use of an artificial environmental conditioning system (AECS) effectivelysimulated the conditions of acid rain on pavements, so it should will be worth while todevelop this system to study the behavior of immersed asphalt mixtures,The application of the tensile strength ratios from the ASTM D4867 standard at thesame time as the correction formula should exactly evaluate the stripping potential ofasphalt mixtures under acid rain conditions.
