The whole ripening cycle of the hybrid tomato line DRW 5981 and Esperanza, characterised by high and low licopene levels respectively, was followed under two different light conditions in order to evaluate the effects of the UVB radiations on the biosynthesis of both carotenoids and flavonoids and the nutrient composition of the fruits. The control plants were subjected to the whole light spectrum, whereas in a second tunnel UVB rays were shielded by a special plastic film. The analysis of carotenoids and flavonoids pointed out the importance of the different nature of light radiations on the accumulation of these antioxidant compounds during ripening.
