Pollution of Coastal Water by Man-made Chemicals

A study was carried out to elucidate the pollution by 285 chemicals incoastal waters around an industrial area, Japan and estimate their effectson aquatic organisms. The total number of chemicals detected was 180,and the mean concentration of each location ranged from 0.24 to 15.8μg/l. The risk of the detected chemicals to marine organisms wascalculated by the quotient method; the division of a concentration by anend points such as a no-observed-effect concentration. Polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides contributed the most in theassessment. The quotient values were as high as toxic effects areexpected to occur.
