Interest in Sediment Retention Devices (SRDs) and Storm Water Treatment Devices(SWTDs) has grown as more stringent storm water and environmental regulations have beenenacted. Increased monitoring and enforcement activities have stimulated demand for moreadvanced and cost effective methods to control sediment and treat storm water beingdischarged from construction related activities.One of the greatest problems facing specifiers in achieving NPDES sedimentreduction goals is the lack of quantifiable criteria for the performance of Best ManagementPractices (BMPs). Standardized methods to quantify effectiveness of sediment reductiondevices and storm water treatment devices have only recently been proposed and arecurrently under consideration by ASTM. Sprague and Carpenter presented a papersummarizing such standardization activities at the 2004 IECA annual conference offering aconsistent and reproducible test method to objectively quantify the sediment retentionefficiencies of various BMPs. This paper will present additional comparative quantitative datagathered in 2004 and 2005 using their proposed test methodology and offer suggestions formodifying the proposed ASTM standard for evaluating sediment retention and storm watertreatment devices on slopes and in channels.
