Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) is a near-netshape manufacturing approach, meaning that theresulting part geometry can be considerably affectedby heat-induced distortions, solidified melt droplets,partially fused powders, and surface modificationsinduced by the laser tool motion and processingstrategy. High-repetition rate femtosecond laserradiation was utilized to improve surface quality ofmetal parts manufactured by laser additive techniques.Different laser scanning approaches were utilized toincrease the ablation efficiency and to improve thesurface finish. Processing of 3D-shaped parts made ofNi- and Ti-base superalloys resulted in the reduction ofthe average surface roughness to a few microns. Thisapproach can be used to post-process parts made ofthermally and mechanically sensitive materials, and toattain complex designed shapes with micrometerprecision.
