Development of a noise and vibration laboratory which includes heavy truck dynamometer testing

This paper discusses the particular goals,issues,challenges and solutions found in the design, development and validation of a newly-built laboratory facility capable of testing a wide variety of test articles,from small electronic devices such as computer disk drives in a hemi-anechoic chamber all the way up to Class 8 heavy trucks with simulated inertia weights of 80,000 lbs and greater than 1000 horsepower on a chassis dynamometer.The greatest challenge was that stringent background noise and vibration requirements had to be met while simultaneously testing in adjacent chambers only meters apart.This required careful consideration of structure- borne and airborne isolation of the entire facility.
