As a national road administration, the Danish Road Directorate aims at improving thepavement noise reducing properties. The usual way to determine the noise reduction isthrough pass-by or near field measurements. The gathered knowledge is used to developnew pavement mixes, hopefully providing better noise reduction. To investigate this, fullscale test sections have been built on in-service roads. If samples of such new noise reducingpavements could be produced in the laboratory, its surface texture measured, and fed intoa simulation tool to derive an estimate of its noise reduction, the efficiency of new pavementdevelopment would be improved. Noise simulations were made applying the SPERoN/AOTsimulation tool on texture data from in-service pavements. The simulation results werecompared with vehicle pass-by (SPB) noise levels and trailer (CPX) noise levels. As a pilotproject the simulation tool was applied for three noise reducing thin layer asphaltpavements. Simulated and measured noise levels gave the same ranking of noise reduction.Predicted noise levels (overall and third-octave-bands) were around 3 dB lower than themeasured SPB noise levels and 0-2 dB lower than the measured CPX noise levels. Therange of variation between surfaces was smaller in predicted than in measured noise levels.
