This project is centred on some 75 square kilometres of the snowdonia National Park in North wales. The area is designated s Site of Special Scientific Interest. Under the European Habitats Directive this area could be designated a Special area Of Conservation. The project arose because of the need to transfer water, destined for public water supply from a high level reservoir to a low level reservoir 5 km away, and the need to minimise the physical environmental impact, by maximising the use of existing facilities. This paper seeks to demonstrate how the project was developed fully integrating environmental issues at every stage of the planning and design process, through effective environmental studies and the involvement of environmental and planning agencies. The project complements the commercial requirements of both an electricity producer and a water supply company and, through an innovative water management scheme, allows an overall improvement in the local environment.
