Integration of Hybrid Wind/Battery System into Diesel Power Plant

Electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) such as wind power (WP) offers a huge possibility for meeting the future power demands (PD). However, the utility of these sources needs an efficient energy storage system (ESS) to maintain the power grid system stability through the whole operation periods. Battery energy storage (BES) systems are capable to co-locate with RES to make balancing which can store the excess energy from these sources and reused it when needed. In this paper, integration of hybrid wind/battery system into diesel power plant (DPP) is presented. The proposed system is modeled as security constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem with mixed-integer linear programming. The simulations have been performed using Gurobi8.0.0 solver implemented in MATLAB and the results show that the significant fuel saving can be achieved through the integration of the wind and the BES.
