In this paper, coal tar pitch is modified with divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross-linking agent in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTS). Effect of modification on carbonization behavior and optical texture of resultant semicokes is assessed.The carbonization behavior is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectroscopy technology, respectively. The optical texture of resultant semicokes is characterized by reflected polarized-lightmicroscopy. The results show that there are marked differences in carbonization behavior of parent coal tar pitch andmodified coal tar pitch. The modification of coal tar pitch results in an increase in carbon yield by 10-21%. The modifiedcoal tar pitch has much methyl and methylene functional groups, which are gradually reductive and aromatization degree isincreasing with increase of heat treatment temperature. Specially, the modification contributes to a notable improvement inthe optical texture of resultant semicokes which varies from coarse-flow anisotropy elongated (CF) to domains (D).
