Perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB) is a very dangerous compound generating when fluoro-organicmaterials are produced or processed. In order to investigate the protective performance of activatedcarbons (Acs) on PFIB, challenging tests were carried out in dynamic tubes with various kinds ofactivated carbons and impregnated carbons. The Acs' properties are investigated by using N2adsorption, water vapor adsorption and XPS methods. The results show that the micropore volume ofAcs is the key factor for the adsorption of PFIB. Acs functions dually as adsorbent and catalyst in theremoval of PFIB. As a competitor, water can block the pores of Acs which hinder the adsorption ofPFIB by AC. However, on the catalysis of nucleophilic groups on Acs' surface, water can react withPFIB to generate some non-toxic compounds. A detailed mechanism about this reaction is proposed inthis paper. It can well accord with experimental results.
