In order to completely understand the real flow condition in a hydraulic retarder, sliding mesh method of multi-flow regions numerical caculation and mixture model were used to simulate the transit flow, and the change of internal flow field structure and the volume distribution of the two-phase flow under different filling rate were obtained. The external characteristics of the hydraulic retarder was calculated. The simulation results were well matched with the test data, which showed the accuracy of numerical calculation method and would greatly contribute to designing the hydraulic retarder and optimizing its structure.
