Preliminary Experiment of a SFCL Based on Air-Core Superconducting Transformer and Inductor-Capacitor Series Resonant Limiter

This superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) includes an air-core high temperature superconducting transformer (HTST) and a group of inductor-capacitor series resonant limiter. The air-core HTST plays the roles of fault current limiting by inductance and the function of isolation. Meanwhile the inductor and capacitor used in series resonance are the conventional devices, and they are in series with the secondary winding of the air-core HTST. Due to they are in series resonant state during the normal working condition, so the impedance of them is close to zero, and this SFCL has almost no influence on the system. While there is a short circuit in the load, they will quit the series resonant state, and their impedance is not zero. Hence, the fault current will be limited by the inductance of air-core HTST and the conventional inductor. To evaluate the feasibility of this SFCL system, a preliminary experiment was taken place in our laboratory. According to the experimental results, this SFCL can operate as expected and the fault current could be limited effectively.
