A method is presented for simulating the dynamical behavior of vehicle drive trains with automatic transmission during gear shift operations. The developed mechanical model includes the main drive train components in order to get realistic predictions of the system behavior. The main problem in gear shift analysis is the non-smooth dynamical behavior of the clutches as this results in a structure-varying system of differential equations. The problem can be solved by formulating the differential-algebraic equations of the system as a standard linear complementarity problem. This efficient formulation allows the treatment of all drive train configurations and all transient processes in the gear box by only one model.
