AN OPEN ARCHITECTURE FOR ADAPTIVE WORKFLOWMANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

One of the main tasks of workflow management systems is the coordination of activities inrnbusiness processes. This paper introduces a solution framework to support adaptive workflowsrnwith complex and unstructured task dependencies.rnIn the first section, the research direction is outlined and a short overview of the PoliFlowrnproject is given. Then, requirements for enterprise process management systems are identifiedrnwith a special focus on coordination and control of unstructured processes.rnTaking these requirements as a basis, an integrated approach for adaptive workflow support isrnpresented. A flexible workflow model including advanced control structures allows actors tornmodify workflow instances during runtime. Finally, a reference architecture is proposed. Onrnthe basis of the SWATS system, it is illustrated how an adaptive support layer can be integratedrnto extend existing workflow management systems. The paper concludes with an overview of therncurrent state of the work and future issues.
