Track Initiator for Multiple-Target Tracking in Polar Coordinates Based on Modified Hough Transform

In order to warn early the fast and low-observable targets in clutter, such as concealed airplanes or cruise missiles for radars with measurements in polar coordinates, a track initiator is proposed. The Modified Hough Transform (MHT) is used as basic algorithm, and distribution of range and azimuth measurement errors as known information. The relation of threshold φ_0 in MHT to the range of target is analyzed. An adaptive threshold is introduced for measurements in polar coordinates, and a radial velocity constraint is adopted as an additional criterion for High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFSWR) track initiator. Compared with the MHT track initiator, it is more appropriate for radars which have measurement errors in polar coordinates, and it has predominance in track initiation of radial moving targets, such as cruise missiles in cruise section. The proposed algorithm is shown to detect the target which is hidden in as many as 800 false alarms per scan. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to confirm the analysis.
