AMS Issues and Future Challenges Facing LocalGovernment

The challenges facing transportation asset managers in local governmentrnin Australia are many including, knowing what funding is required to provide thernrequired levels for service for transportation services from the local road network,rnknowing what funding is currently being spent on the local road network, knowingrnwhether there is a ‘funding gap’ and what are the consequences of a funding gap andrnwhat can be done to reduce the funding gap and/or service levels to a level that therncommunity is willing and able to afford. The paper explores current knowledge andrnpractice in these areas and makes recommendations for future direction at the nationalrnand local level including identifying the share of ownership costs of the local roadrnnetwork that each level of government should bear.
