DIE CASTING OF AUTOMOBILE STRUCTURE COMPONENTS ASNEAR NET SHAPE TECHNOLOGY

The die casting process of light metal parts is a very important manufacturing process in massrnproduction. Integrative functional die casting components are of increasing importance e. g. forrnautomotive industry. Compared to traditional fabrication of light metal chassis the die castingrnprocess is an efficient and economical technology, which provides the fabrication of complexrnparts with closer tolerances in a near net shape technology. On the other hand new problems arernfound concerning distortion and crack sensitivity in thin walled die casting components. Therncomplex parts mostly are safety parts and therefore they have to fulfil strong mechanical tests.rnThis paper deals with the die casting process at Volkswagen foundry Kassel of thin walled lightrnmetal components and their specialities to reach accuracy and postulated mechanical behaviour.rnEspecially the distortion appearing at die casting process and heat treatment are discussed.
