High sulphur coals and oxidised high rank coals as efficient sorbents for mercury removal from industrial waste solutions

The capacity of coals for mercury(II) has been studied and comparisons drawn with commercial active carbons and ion exchange resins. Low-rank coals and the oxidised bituminous coals have nearly comparable capacities to the active carbons and resins. A potential advantage of the high sulphur coals investigated is for the removal of mercury ions from acidic or high chloride ion media.
