Ships moored in harbours are subjected to hydrodynamicrnforces due to other ships passing nearby. Such forces inducernmotions of the moored ship which may hinderrnloading/discharging operations or cause damage to thernmooring system. These forces, sometimes known as suctionrnforces, are associated with the primary pressure system aroundrnthe sailing vessel which acts upon the moored ship.rnIn this paper some of the aspects which play a role in effectsrndue to passing ships will be treated. In order to do so, tworncomputational methods developed by the first author to predictrnthe low frequency forces due to a passing ship will be used.rnThe first of these is based on implementation of the so-calledrn'double-body' flow method previously introduced byrnother authors.rnThe second, newly developed, method applied in this paperrnpredicts passing ship effects also taking into account freernsurface effects due to the passing ship and the additionalrnforces these exert on the moored ship. Results of bothrncomputational methods are compared . Full scale tests wererncarried out by Svasek Hydraulics and MARIN on behalf ofrnthe Port of Amsterdam. These tests involved ,among others,rnmeasurement of the mooring forces of a fully loaded bargernduring the passage of large vessels in the Noordzeekanaalrnwhich joins the Port of Amsterdam to the North Sea. Resultsrnof these measurements are compared with computations.rnFinally, an unusual case involving the generation of solitaryrnwaves by a vessel in a canal is treated.
