Traditional methods for solving integrated multi-stage production planning problems were usually based on hierarchical models. The methods of using a single model to formulate this kind of problems have been considered to be more exact and effective, although such models are very difficult or even impossible to solve by conventional approaches. Taking into account of the JIT idea, the integrated lot sizing and scheduling problem is formulated with a single model and a new performance criterion in this paper, and a genetic algorithm is established for solving the problem. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been shown by the results of numerical experiments.
