In modern motion control applications, many electric motors are operated from a drive amplifier instead of direct connection from the power lime. Although we can define some performance characteristics from the motor alone, many other characteristics should be defined and tested as a paired set. The paper discussed various characteristic parameters that define the motor and the drive system performance as well as test and measurement procedures to obtain them. Since many drive systems come with position or velocity servo control capability, we attempted to include several servo system performance indices. Although servo performance cannot be defined without specific application, servo performance data based on a representative load is proposed so as to indicate the level of expected performance for well-designed applications.
