A hybrid switching control scheme which combines the best features of bipolar and unipolar switching is described. The control of current in a DC motor driven by an H bridge is analysed for both bipolar and unipolar switching control to show up the relative advantages and disadvantages of each control scheme. The hybrid control scheme incorporates unipolar switching for both motoring and regeneration as well as bipolar switching when required during regeneration. The analysis and simulation results are presented together with the measured results obtained from an implementation of the hybrid switching control scheme. The control strategy is readily incorporated into an integrated H bridge controller and can overcome the shortcoming of existing commercial units.
