The study presents a new nondestructive measurement method of fruit firmness by combining a compact vibration generator and a laser Doppler vibrometer. The results were compared to the reference destructive measurement method for three types of fruits. Coefficients of determination (R2) between both methods were 0.7077, 0.8511 and 0.6093 respectively for firmness of tomatoes, European pears and apples. This high correlation demonstrates the potentiality of the proposed nondestructive measurement method for applications in fruit sorting according to their firmness or fruit ripeness evaluation.
