While LCR databridge instruments are used to probe the integrity of skin, there is confusion in this literature about what these instruments report in series (SER) or parallel (PAR) modes at user-specified measurement frequencies, typically 100 or 1,000 Hz. Here, the theoretical meanings of resistance and capacitance measurements in PAR and SER mode are presented. A large body of data from human cadaver skin are used to show that LCR databridge resistance measured at 100 Hz in PAR mode and capacitance measured at 100 Hz in SER mode are most sensitive to skin resistivity, which is the electrical measurement most closely related to skin integrity. The single-frequency databridge resistance values are shown to correlate to skin permeability measurements using tritiated water.
