The methodology leading to the development and analysis of a Geographical Information System layer (GIS), forrnmaterial debris dispersion, in the event of an explosion of a launch vehicle – the space shuttle in this case – as wellrnas some of the findings resulting from this study are discussed. The layer, which is being developed based on an inflightrnsimulated explosion of the vehicle, will be incorporated in the Virtual Range simulation model, to determinernthe population at risk and the expectation of casualties (EC) resulting from debris fragmentation following a launchrnvehicle explosion.
