Multilingual System for Universal Communication: Web Browser Implementation of Mixed-Language Document Handling System

摘要

We have developed an internationalized Web browser than can show pages mixed up with various written script languages. We used Arena of W3C as a base and a library called System 1, which we have been developing for several years to support internationalization of applications in the area of text processing. We report, through this experiment, what the key issues in internationalization are, what possible solutions for them are, and how to escape from the spell of POSIX Locale Model, which effectively binds usin an 'English plus one' scripting world. We emphasize the importance of deep respect for what have been accumulated as cultural activity; it is the key to mutual under-standing in global communication.
