This paper presents a procedure to compute the optimum control direction (control include real andreactive powers, settings of tap changing transformers, SVCs, and shunt capacitor devices) whichmoves the system away from a saddle node bifurcation and the associated voltage collapse, based on acontinuation power flow and the left eigenvector formula for the normal vector n* to S (set of allsaddle node bifurcation points), calculated from steady-state system model. The computation issimple enough to contribute to the practical planning and control of a power system to avoid voltagecollapse blackouts. The procedure has been applied to Bosnian Power System, and obtained resultsare presented in the paper.
