The problem considered here relates to locating the seismic focus, and so the epicentre of an earthquake, or earth tremor, as well as to general studies on propagation of the s hock waves in different cases. The key concept is in estimating the time delay between waveforms detected at different points of earth's surface, and coming from one source. A technique emplying genetic algorithm and incorporating a digital filter with fractional delay is presented. When compared with traditional approaches, it proves more reliable and more precise.
